Scripture to pray

Bible Verses for Grief and Loss

God does not rush your sorrow. He draws near to it.

Below are 6 verses for grief and loss. Read each one slowly, then use the short note under it to turn the verse into a prayer. You do not need special words. Just be honest with God.

  1. Psalm 34:18

    “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

    How to pray it: Tell God exactly where it hurts, and ask Him to be near you right there.

  2. Matthew 5:4

    “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

    How to pray it: Give yourself permission to grieve, and ask God for the comfort He promised.

  3. Psalm 147:3

    “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

    How to pray it: Ask God to bind up the wound, even if it takes time to heal.

  4. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

    “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

    How to pray it: Call Him the God of all comfort, and ask Him to comfort you today.

  5. John 11:25-26

    “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”

    How to pray it: Answer Jesus' question honestly, and ask Him to strengthen your hope.

  6. Revelation 21:4

    “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

    How to pray it: Thank God that this sorrow is not the end of the story.
